Hedonic Utility, Loss Aversion and Moral Hazard

چکیده

This paper reviews recent advances in the modelling of hedonic utility and the measurement of its physiological correlates. The paper also argues that incorporating hedonic experiences can enrich economic models. An example of such an application — a principal–agent model with moral hazard — is presented and thoroughly analyzed. Its implications are then compared with the structure of incentive contracts observed in practice. Full text available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1561/0700000041

Risk or Loss Aversion? Evidence from Personnel Records

I use data on individual pay and output from Safelite Corp. to estimate a principal-agent model with moral hazard in which the agent has preferences that approximate various specifications of reference dependence, diminishing sensitivity, and loss aversion, as well as the standard case of CARA utility. Estimating the preference parameters via GMM on the incentive and participation constraints s...

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility

Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...

The First-Order Approach to Moral Hazard Problems with Hidden Saving

This paper proposes a general method to validate the first-order approach for moral hazard problems with hidden saving. I show that strong convexity assumptions both on the agent’s marginal utility of consumption and the distribution function of output arise naturally in this context. The first-order approach is valid given nonincreasing absolute risk aversion (NIARA) utility and log-convex dis...

Disentangling Moral Hazard and Adverse Selection

This paper analyzes a canonical principal-agent problem with moral hazard and adverse selection. The agent is risk averse and has private information about his disutility of taking an unobservable action. The principal is risk neutral and designs a menu of contracts consisting of a compensation scheme and a recommended action for each type of agent to maximize expected profit. We first derive a...
